Edvard Munch’s pastel version of “The Scream” holds the record for the most expensive artwork ever sold at auction at the time. On May 2nd, 2012, the piece, created in 1895, was sold at Sotheby’s Impressionist and Modern Art auction for a staggering $119,922,600. Out of four versions Munch created, this vibrant pastel rendition was hotly contested by bidders before ultimately being purchased by American financier Leon Black.
