Events from History: 4 May 1471

The Battle of Tewkesbury, a pivotal clash in the Wars of the Roses, was fought on May 4th, 1471. It pitted King Edward IV of the House of York against the Lancastrian forces led by Queen Margaret of Anjou and her son, Prince Edward.

The battle resulted in a decisive victory for the Yorkists. Despite having a larger army, the Lancastrians were hampered by a poor defensive position and a botched surprise attack. The Yorkists capitalized on these mistakes, inflicting heavy casualties on the Lancastrians, including Prince Edward himself. This loss effectively ended any significant Lancastrian resistance, solidifying Edward IV’s hold on the English throne.
